Residents in Skerries are appealing Fingal County Council's decision to allow a new fast food drive-thru beside a school.

The site is at the Skerries Point Shopping Centre- next door to a montessori and 50 metres away from a residential area.

It is also only a short walk from five schools.

Obesity In Ireland

The latest statistics suggest that one in five children in Ireland is classified as obese.

A recent Oireachtas Committee report recommended that so-called ‘no fry zones’ be implemented around schools in a bid to tackle the issue.

Locals managed to raise €10,000 through a gofundme account to appeal the decision.

Skerries resident Karen Power is on The Drive-Thru Oppposition Committee.

She can't understand how the permission was granted in the first place.

She said "It's a bit baffling because just 18 months previously, the same planning officer- the same planning authority- turned down an application for a drive-thru just 100 metres up the road; on the same side of the road;because it was too close to a residential area."

A decision is due on the case next month.
