Rising fuel prices are leading to driving lessons becoming more expensive.

Some driving schools are charging learner drivers an extra €60 to complete their 12 mandatory lessons before they apply for a test.

Students are aware of the impact the rising cost of petrol and diesel is having on driving lessons, according to one instructor.

Ladybird Driving School, based in Tallaght and Dun Laoghaire says it's added a €2 to €3 fuel surcharge to the price of individual lessons.

Managing director of Ladybird, Kevin Horgan, says they make the costs very clear when learner drivers are looking to book lessons.

"The surcharge would be explained in the beginning that look, the price is for 6 lessons of 12 lessons plus a little surcharge for fuel and they are okay with that.

"We'd have that information for them when they call up so that there's no surprises for them."
