Merchants Quay Ireland is hoping a dedicated centre for women dealing with addiction issues can open in Dublin by next year.

It says there's an "urgent need" for it as many women are reluctant to engage with existing services.

The organisation says many female addicts are physically and sexually abused, struggle with their mental health, and face trauma.

Its report says shame, fear of their children being taken off them and feeling intimidated when attending services are all factors stopping them seeking help.

The organisation warns this can often lead to tragic outcomes for women and their children.

Merchants Quay says it's committed to opening a service aimed at women struggling with addiction - but needs state support.

Specific problems around health and social needs and childcare and housing would be among the issues the service would seek to address.
