A New York-based firm of architects has been chosen to develop a new centre for creative design at University College Dublin.

The 48 million euro development will also include a new entrance to the college, after complaints the existing one is "underwhelming, nondescript and unfriendly to pedestrians and cyclists".

Steven Holl Architects say their design was inspired by the Giant’s Causeway and the work of James Joyce.

The project brief said it should address the current “arrival experience” at UCD, which was framed by 1960s traffic engineering.

The works are expected to be completed by 2021, and will include a new entrance from the Stillorgan dual carriageway which had been planned before the economy crashed in 2008.
