A massive new UCD student accommodation complex has been given the green light under new planning laws.

However, local Councillors are unhappy the power to block developments like this has been taken out of their hands.

UCD has been given the go ahead for a huge development which will provide term-time homes for well over 2 thousand students.

However planning chiefs refused permission for a further three blocks, one of which would have been ten storeys high and too close to Roebuck Castle.

This is the first project given the green light under new fast track planning rules aimed at tackling the housing crisis.

Developers can go straight to the top when looking for permission, rather than going through the local council.

Fine Gael representative Barry Saul didn't want the plans to go ahead and says he's not comfortable the new arrangement

"Councillors, one of the few roles they have is passing local area plans, that process and those powers have now been eroded", he explained.

Transport Minister and local TD Shane Ross had said student housing would be very welcome but he didn't believe this project should go ahead.

He gave traffic congestion and the proximity to residential areas as reasons.
