Two prison officers have been injured following an attack in the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.
Its understood staff intervened after a fight broke out among a group of prisoners shortly before midday.
One officer is reported to have received a knife wound, however his injuries have been described as not serious.
The Irish Prison Service has launched an investigation into the incident and Gardai have been notified.
