Two prison officers have been hospitalised after an alleged attack by two prisoners in Mountjoy this morning.

It’s the latest in a spate of attacks on prison officers in recent months.

The prison officers were trying to clear Mountjoy’s A1 landing after breakfast this morning when one of the inmates refused to leave.

He then allegedly grabbed the handle of a brush and beat the officers with it.

A source told 98FM News that another prisoner joined in and the two officers were taken to hospital. One suffered head injuries while the other is being treated for an injury to his hand.

It’s understood one of their alleged attackers is a drug dealer serving a lengthy sentence.

This is just the latest in a series of violent attacks in Irish prisons. A prisoner in Cork was stabbed to death last weekend and a nurse was knocked out by another prisoner in Wheatfield prison two days ago.
