The dust has barely settled on Cross City works, but there is already a call for another extension to the Luas.

One City Councillor wants the green line to run as far as Finglas, and eventually link up with Metro North.

Paul McAuliffe, who represents Ballymun, believes it'll be needed as passenger numbers continue to grow.

“More and more people are moving to our area to commute to work and college which is putting enormous pressure on our road capacity and bus services", he said.

Councillor McAuliffe went on to say that “Despite the huge growth in demand for public transport by commuters across North Dublin, there was just an 8% increase in the latest budget for transport services."

Cross City works took four and a half years to complete, and caused major disruption for traffic, pedestrians and businesses before they were finished.

Councillor McAuliffe has launched a website to kick start his campaign – D11LUAS.com where he is encouraging those interested to sign up to an online petition.

It is believed that extending the Luas through the Dublin 11 area to link with the Metro North at the M50, would provide a long term solution to the growing congestion problems.

The extended line could also serve areas including Finglas and Charlestown.
