After one of the hottest and driest summers in years, the hosepipe ban has formally been lifted.

The restriction was put in place earlier this year to help replenish levels at a number of reservoirs.

However, Irish Water says increased rainfall means it's now able to lift the ban.

Irish Water’s conservation expert, Kate Gannon, said the restrictions were "vital for reducing significant peaks in demand" in June.

“In the Greater Dublin Area, where we were very concerned about the levels in the Poulaphuca reservoir, the rate of decline has decreased significantly and the probability of an outage is now very low", she said.

Ms Gannon said the company is "really grateful" to everyone who helped conserve water during the summer months.
