The head of the Public Accounts Committee doesn't think Stepaside Garda Station in Dublin will actually re-open.

Sean Fleming says the decision was a political one made without the consideration of policing priorities.

Stepaside has been shut since 2012 when it was one of over 100 Garda stations closed as part of Government cuts.

There's been controversy ever since it was announced that the station in the Transport Minister's constituency was set to re-open its doors, despite senior Garda wishes.

But PAC Chair Sean Fleming says it's not a done deal yet.

"The police have to say it to the Office of Public Works first. They have to get an estimate of the costs involved. They have to examine the suitability of the building. And the police also say that the growth of population in that region of Dublin and a new police station there will be a higher priority."
