It's emerged some landlords are earning over 100 thousand euro a year on Airbnb.

The Irish Independent reports that nearly five thousand properties are fetching as much as €800 a night.

It's leading to fresh concerns that homes are being removed from the rental market to meet lucrative short-term demands.

Sinn Féin's Eoin Ó Broin says stricter rules are needed in the short term rental sector.

''One of the things that is concerning to many of us, isn't just the lack of regulation in the short term letting sector but the potential impact it's having on the housing and homeless crisis - particularly in Dublin City Centre.''

Deputy Ó Broin says effective regulation would benefit both the tourism industry and the housing crisis.

''What you do is you protect the person who is renting the room and you protect the wider societal interest. I think you can find that balance quite easily. There would be no constitutional implications to putting in place proper regulations as there are in every other aspect of the rental sector.''
