Irish Water has picked Newtown at Kilshane Cross to be the home of a sewage storage facility.
The utility company has identified the industrial site in Fingal as its preferred place to build the new facility.
It will take the sludge produced at the Ringsend water treatment plant.
The storage site would house 48,000 tonnes of the 'biosolids', the Irish Times reports.
Irish Water says the sludge has a low odour and is non-harmful.
Five sites across Dublin and Meath were assessed, but the site at Newtown at Kilshane best fitted the criteria.
It was found to be the cheapest as well as having the least amount of least impact on the landscape.
Donal O’Connor, Project Manager with Irish Water, said the plant is necessary due to the growing population and economic activity in the Dublin area and surrounding counties.
He observed: "Having adequate wastewater treatment infrastructure in place is vital to support residential and commercial development and to protect the environment."
