The opening of extra emergency beds has led to a "significant" fall in numbers sleeping on the streets of Dublin.

That's according to one group, which counted 46 people on the streets last night - down from a high of 200 one night last year.

An extra 200 emergency beds were introduced by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive before Christmas.

Anthony Flynn from Inner City Helping Homeless hopes it's a sign of things to come.

"This is the first time in five years that we have seen such decrease in the number of people on the streets".

"What we're asking for now is that these beds are kept open so that we can keep people off the streets", he added.
