The Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan has extended his sympathies to the Australian people following yesterday's fatal siege in Sydney.
Describing it as "a tragedy" and "deeply distressing", Minister Flanagan said "we stand with our friends in Australia at this difficult time".
Flags will fly at half mast on all State buildings in Australia today as a mark of respect to the two hostages who died in the siege.
They were 34 year old cafe manager Tori Johnson and 38 year old barrister and mother of three Katrina Dawson.
The victims have been hailed as heroes, it's claimed Ms. Dawson, was shot and killed trying to protect her pregnant friend, while Mr. Johnson, tried to wrestle the gun away from the suspect before it went off, killing him.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has offered his condolences to their families:
