Gardai are now searching for a weapon which may have been used in the lead up to Philip Finnegan’s death.

Yesterday, a murder investigation was launched in relation to the 24 year old's death, after his body was found in Rahin Wood, Co. Kildare on Friday.

Mr. Finnegan had been missing from his home at Mary Aikenhead Flats on James’s Street, Dublin 8 since the 10th of August last. It’s believed he was an associate of different criminal elements in the south inner-city.

Independent News and Media Journalist Conor Feehan has more insight into his horrific death “It seems he was killed at the site. It’s understood he was stabbed to death and there were efforts made to conceal him. He was wearing a bulletproof vest when he was found, and there were also efforts to dispose of his body by burning”.

Feehan says Finnegan may have fallen afoul of former associates over money, claiming the chief suspects at this stage are “former associates of the gang once led by Brian Rattigan”, who is serving time in prison.

In July 2013, Finnegan was targeted in a drive-by shooting attack, while a hatchet was thrown through his house later that December.

No arrests have been made yet.
