New plans to build on sports grounds near St Anne's Park in Raheny are being blocked by locals.

Not for the first time, an application has been lodged to develop hundreds of houses and apartments near the park.

The grounds are used by St Paul's College for six playing pitches.

Last year, planning permission was granted under the Strategic Housing Development System.

But the decision was overturned after the community won their case against the development in the High Court.

Now, new proposals for 657 apartments, including nine-storey blocks have been lodged.

Local Labour Councillor for the area Aodhán O'Riordan says locals will never support development at the site.

He said "We need community facilities; we need the green land on the northside to be protected we feel very strongly about Sty Anne's Park.

"It's a beautiful park that everyone enjoys so much on the northside."

Housing Crisis

Councillor O'Riordan acknowledges that the city is in desperate need of more houses.

He said that he has come in for some criticism for his support of the plans to develop O'Devaney Gardens site.

But he said that location in Dublin 7 is zoned for housing.

However, the grounds at St Anne's is zoned for recreational facilities.

He said "This is not appropriately zoned. It's zoned Z15, that's for institutional and community used and they are sports pitches.

He added "There's any amount of sites that we constantly support for housing- but this isn't one of them."

The Hands Around The Park protest will take place at St Anne's Park at 11.30am on Sunday 17th November 2019.
