Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy has announced we'll go to the polls to elect a president on Friday the 26th of October.

The minister has responsibility for signing the order that clears the way for the vote.

He has announced this morning he plans to set the date for Friday the 26th.

So far there are no confirmed candidates to run against Michael D Higgins, but local authorities will be able to nominate people from Thursday.

So far we know businessman Gavin Duffy, Pieta House founder Joan Freeman, artist Kevin Sharkey and investigative journalist Gemma O'Dohery are all seeking a nomination.

Sinn Fein also plans to field a candidate but their identity is still not known.

They have 28 days from the write being signed to get their name on the ballot paper.
