The competition authority is investigating a complaint of a cartel operation among waste companies throughout the county.

In a phone conversation recorded by Fingal County Councillor Keith Redmond, a staff member from one waste company revealed that a deal had been done to split the county up between several businesses.

That has limited some areas of the capital access to just a single waste bin provider.

Cllr. Redmond told 98FM what prompted him to investigate the issue "It happened on foot of a request I received from a constituent in Howth who couldn't find another waste bin provider. I rang around various waste companies and nobody would go into Howth which was astounding initially."

Cllr. Redmond says he has been working in coordination with the competition authority on issue since July and believes the government needs to step in.

"There would appear to be at the very least a compelling case for the Minister to suspend the new bin charge regime. In the situation where we effectively have effectively one provider in a large area of Dublin and they can charge whatever they want, in my view, it's a licence to gauge."

"We can't have a situation where nobody else but your current bin provider will come into you area. That has to be explained in an innocent manner for the current market to continue."
