Cabinet has agreed to delay the increase in toll charges by six months.

The move is expected to cost the state around €12.5m.

The decision to increase tolls on nine of the country's ten tolled roads from January 1st , sparked intense opposition.

Politicians, hauliers and motorists slammed the proposal , due to the cost of living crisis.

Toll charges were due to rise by the maximum amount allowed due to the rate of inflation.

However, the government has intervened and confirmed they will not go up until July at a cost to the state of €12.5m.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland says it will immediately commence formal discussions with toll operators on its implementation.

TII is due before an Oireachtas Committee this evening in relation to the setting of tolls in Ireland.
