Irish Rail says it has passed on details to gardai of a begging scam affecting some Dublin trains.

Organised criminal gangs are targeting commuters on the Maynooth and Dart lines.

They put tissue packets at each seat and ask for money for them. If people refuse, the gang member turns hostile.

No third party sales are allowed on trains in Ireland.

Speaking to 98FM News, Irish Rail's Barry Kenny, says there has been at least two arrests and the company is deploying security teams to help clamp down on the problem.

"Initially we had seen some cases on the Maynooth line and some instances were also reported on the DART."

One source has told 98FM that she witnessed the racket on a train last weekend on her way from Grand Canal Dock to Killiney.

"It was really quick, he got on the carriage just to get money off people so it was all over pretty quickly but it seemed quite suspicious and dodgy."

The advice to passengers is not to contribute to these sellers and to report any cases to Iarnród Éireann
