Gardai involved in policing this year's St. Patricks Day parade have hailed it a major success.

In a debrief, officers have been explaining how some people tried to sneak alcohol past checkpoints.

Off licenses across Dublin aren't allowed to open until 4PM every St. Patrick's Day, to try and prevent anti-social behaviour.

Chief Superintendent Pat Leahy says teenagers had swapped plastic bottles for another type of holder.

He said "The kids were going into Starbucks and places like that, pouring the coffee out and putting drink in".

"They normally use Fanta or Coke bottles, and we're used to confiscating things like that", he added.

Sup't Leahy continued "I'd say it was 5 or 6 o'clock in the evening before we realised - 'there's an awful lot of them drinking coffee this year'".

Gardai say that, despite this, it was one of the better years for policing the event.
