Up to a quarter of taxi drivers stopped at illegal immigration checkpoints in May are suspected of being in a sham marriage.

According to The Irish Times, an operation was put in place to coincide with Ed Sheeran's Phoenix Park concerts in May.

Of the 110 drivers stopped, 26 are believed to have paid to marry a European woman who they'd never met, which would give them to right to live and work here.

It's understood all of the men were from outside the EU and have had their immigration status revoked.

Garda sources have told the paper that detectives decided to target taxi drivers after an unusual pattern emerged in new public service vehicle applications.
