Two babies and 16 exchange students were on board a German plane that crashed in France.

The Germanwings jet was en route to Dusseldorf from Barcelona when it nosedived into a remote part of the French Alps this morning.

There were 150 people on board, and the French President Francois Hollande says it's expected there will be no survivors.

Search and rescue crews are currently trying to reach the remote crash site. The Airbus A320 was around an hour into its flight when it went into a steep decline which lasted about eight minutes.

The cause of the crash isn't yet known, and details of the nationalities of those on board aren't yet known.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising anyone with concerns about the flight to call 01-408 2527.
