Plans have been unveiled to create a visitor centre beside the Jeanie Johnston.

It's hoped a new diaspora centre at nearby CHQ will help feed thousands of new visitors into it.

The Jeanie Johnston is docked on Custom House Quay and gets 25 thousand visitors a year.

It's currently owned by the Dublin Docklands Development Authority but will become the property of Dublin City council when the authority is broken up.

They're putting together a business plan which will grow the visitor numbers.

Paul Clegg is Chief Executive of the DDDA

"We feel there is potential here to increase the foot fall up to 70 thousand per annum. We're looking at development a shore side facility. At the moment, people turn up at the pontoon and they do the tour so there's not really a place for toilets or to sit down and watch a video before they take the tour".

The famine ship replica had to be sent to dry dock late last year to repair water damage.

But Mr. Clegg says everything is fully repaired.

"All the works have been completed now, it's out of dry dock. There's no question of it being water logged, all the maintenance is up to date. It's on the river, it's operational".

The bill to dissolve the Dublin Docklands Development Authority was only published last week and won't be heard in the Oireachtas until after the summer break.
