New Restrictions Proposed For Bull Island

Dogs may have to be kept on a lead at all times on Bull Island during the summer.

New proposals are being made to protect birds and other wildlife in the area.

It's also being proposed that people won't be allowed access certain parts of Bull Island including the salt marsh and northern tip of the island. This is where the birds feed as they prepare to migrate. It's estimated 2 million people visit Bull Island every year.

Green Party councillor Donna Cooney says the wildlife has to be protected.

''We have been looking at what we can do in terms of reaching a balance. Obviously it's an important amenity for people but also it's a nature reserve and it's the oldest of Ireland's bird sanctuaries aswell. We have to live in balance and harmony with nature.''
