A portrait of all the sitting female TDs and Senators has been unveiled in Leinster House.

Artist Noel Murphy was commissioned to do the work to mark 100 years of women's suffrage, and it was unveiled today as part of International Women's Day celebrations.

As well as the 53 current female members of the Dáil and Seanad, the painting also features the image of the first female member of parliament - Countess Markievicz.

Labour TD Joan Burton says it's a great piece of work, but odd to see.

She joked: "It's much better, I think, than Mario Rosenstock or Oliver Callan [impressions], being honest. And I think a lot of the other women who've had that privilege would say the same."

Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl accepted the painting on behalf of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

On the significance of International Women's Day, he observed: "It is an opportunity to celebrate the valuable work of women and it highlights the progress that has been made in the struggle for equality.

"It is also an opportunity to open debate about how we can continue this good work into the future and how we can achieve gender parity across the board.”
