Part of a 42-acre army base in south Dublin may be used for social and affordable housing.

The development, at Cathal Brugha barracks in Rathmines is being considered as part of the national development plan, Ireland 2040.

The site is one of the largest available spaces in south Dublin.

Local independent Councillor, Ruairi McGinley, is in favour of the plan.  He told 98FM that it's very difficult to find any available space for any kind of large building project in most parts of the city.

However, the Councillor believes it would be possible to build houses whilst retaining the base as an operational barracks for the army as well.
