Nearly Ten Percent Of Population Living In Overcrowded Accomodation

Nearly 10 percent of the country's population are living in accommodation with less than one room per person.

That's according to a new report by the Central Statistics Office.

The figures have been published in today's Ireland Edition of The Times.

Overcrowding is defined as living in a place with less than one room per person - and that's the situation for almost 10 percent of people in Ireland.

The average overcrowded home housed 4.7 people - that's a 28 percent increase on 2011.

The crisis has forced renters in urban areas to group together in larger numbers in order to afford housing.

More than half of Irish people now live in Leinster with over 14,000 people moving to Dublin from another county in the 12 months to April 2016.

Drogheda remains the biggest town with a population of 40,956 and they're followed by Swords at 39,248.
