Almost three in ten cases (29%) in hospital emergency departments on a Sunday morning are alcohol related.

A new Irish study in the British Medical Journal shows that during the week only 6 percent are linked to booze.

The first study of its kind analysed almost 3,200 presentations across 29 hospitals over four 24 hour periods.

They were more likely to be men, more likely to be brought by ambulance, and more likely to leave before being seen by a doctor.

Alcohol related presentations fell to just over 1 percent when researchers profiled Monday mornings.

One of the report's authors has told the BMJ we need better services here for people with drink problems so that people don't end up in ambulances and EDs.
