It's understood transport bosses have come up with a solution to a row over a Glasnevin tunneling site which would see major disruption for three schools and two sports clubs.

Na Fianna, Home Farm FC and Scoil Chaitriona are among the groups joining forces to oppose the construction plans.

Dublin's first underground, Metro Link, is a rail line planned for Sandyford to beyond Swords with part of the track running underground.

The National Transport Authority's plans involve turning the pitches of Na Fianna GAA club into a construction site for the duration of the project.

However local Fine Gael TD, Noel Rock, says it appears a solution has been found which involves excavating for a single tunnel instead of two.

This would mean Na Fianna's main pitch would be saved and the duration of the dig would be reduced to two years.

"They're looking at a single tunnel construction site at Northwood, just north of Ballymun. The tunneling will start there and run right the way to Charlemont. So there won't be a need for a second tunneling site at Na Fianna as was initially envisaged."
