Riverdance legend Michael Flatley has confirmed he’s seriously considering a run for President of Ireland, with his team lodging papers in court indicating plans to seek nominations ahead of the upcoming autumn election.

During a candid interview on RTÉ Radio 1 with Brendan O’Connor, Flatley shared that although no political party has formally approached him, he’s consulting a team of advisers as he weighs the decision. He admits juggling existing commitments—including choreographing, running a whiskey business, and raising a young family—but stressed he’d only proceed if he felt he could truly be a voice for the Irish people, who he believes currently “lack a proper, deep voice that speaks their language”.

Flatley pointed to nearly 30 years spent promoting Ireland globally—where he’s met world leaders like the Obamas, Bushes, and British royalty—as fitting preparation for the largely ceremonial yet symbolic presidential role. He added: “I’m not sure we need another politician… it’s a statesman’s role”.

The election must take place before 11 November, marking the end of outgoing President Michael D. Higgins's term. So far, Mairead McGuinness (Fine Gael) and Catherine Connolly (Independent) have secured the required nominations. Potential candidates such as Conor McGregor are also being discussed, though Flatley’s high-profile entry would certainly shake things up.

If he decides to go forward, Flatley must either gather support from 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities to officially enter the race . With his relocation to Ireland due within two weeks, the buzz is only going to grow.
