Former Fianna Fail minister Mary O'Rourke has revealed she paid for two women to travel to England for abortions in the 1990a.

The retired politician has told the Irish Examiner she helped the "deeply distressed" women when she was an opposition TD.

The former deputy party leader says she remembers the "sordid and very sad" reasons for them going.

“They were going, anyway, no matter what I said. I didn’t look at the legalities, I was not a police officer. They came to me for practical help and you know what that meant.”

Mrs O'Rourke has recently admitted she's undecided how she'll vote in the abortion referendum, saying she's around long enough to know "life is not black and white."
