A man who raped a young Spanish student three times after luring her to a tent in Dublin has been jailed for 14 years.

Eoin Berkeley, previously of Hamptonwood Way in Finglas, also threatened to kill her during an attack that lasted 21 hours during the summer of 2017.

Mr Justice Michael White said there was no doubt these offences are at the extreme end of the spectrum when it comes to seriousness for the crime of rape.

He said it involved an element of pre-meditation and planning, in that Eoin Berkeley approached her on the Liffey boardwalk on a summer’s day.

He offered to take her to an Irish beach.

She had only arrived in Ireland two weeks beforehand, and agreed to go with him because she’d never seen one.

He lied to her and he instead brought her to a tent on the derelict site of the old Irish Glass Bottle site, where he raped her three times over the course of the next 21 hours.

The court heard he restrained her with a dog leash when she resisted, and threatened to cut off her hands with a hand saw if she kept moving.

Mr Justice White also had to take into account Mr Berkeley’s troubled background and mental health issues.

He decided a 14 year sentence was appropriate.

Berkeley, who is 25, stretched, chuckled and cracked his knuckles in the dock before he was taken away to begin his sentence.
