A man is being treated for critical injuries after a scrambler landed on his head in Darndale park.

The 38 year old was lying out shortly before 2pm on Saturday when the motorbike went out of control. He was rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Gardai are currently interviewing a number of witnesses to establish how the incident occurred. No arrests have been made, but Gardaí are following a definite line of inquiry.

Sinn Féin TD Dessie Ellis has called on the Government to allow time for his legislation to be enacted which would enable Gardaí to deal with the problem of quads and scramblers in local communities.

He said it has been a "major problem in many areas and I have received over the last number of weeks reports of quads and scramblers being used in Tolka Valley Park, along Balbriggan Beach, Donabate, Portmarnock and many other public parks around Dublin."

"It is an ever increasing problem and the Gardai seem powerless to stop it", he said.

Deputy Ellis is now calling for the government to move forward with a bill he worked on, which he says would allow Gardaí to "deal effectively with quad and scrambler users who continuously flout the rules of the road and do not have a licence, insurance and registration."
