A man has been rushed to hospital after a shooting on the southside.

A media blackout was put in place after Gardai responded to reports of a man carrying a gun in Windy Arbour.

The alarm was raised just after 3.30 this afternoon and Garda negotiators were called in to deal with a suspected gunman at Farrenboley Park, which is a housing estate just off the Dundrum Rd in Windy Arbour.

A large cordon was put in place, the Garda helicopter was scrambled to the area and units from Dublin Fire Brigade were also dispatched.

Just over two hours later, the Garda tape was lifted to allow an ambulance and a Garda motorbike to pass through the estate.

A media blackout was lifted a short time later when Gardai released a statement saying the situation had been brought to a safe conclusion.

Reports of a gunshot being fired remain unconfirmed this evening and while Gardai say the man has been brought to St Vincents Hospital to be treated for a head injury, it's still not clear how that injury was sustained.
