An elderly man has died in a house fire in the city overnight.

The fire is believed to have broke out in the kitchen of the bungalow on the North Stand Road.

The alarm was raised shortly before 9.00pm last night after smoke was spotted near the rear of the house.

Three units of the Dublin Fire Brigade brought the blaze under control and the man was taken to the Mater Hospital.

He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The house has been sealed off for an investigation.
