Gardaí are investigating the death of a man in his 50's whose body was found in an apartment in Sligo overnight.

The man who Gardaí say had suffered 'significant physical injuries' was discovered at an apartment on Connaughton Road at around 10.30pm.

His body remains at the scene this morning pending the arrival of the Garda technical bureau and the state pathologist.

Following intense Garda activity and assistance from the air support unit, Gardai arrested a man in Sligo town at around 1.45am this morning.

He's aged in his early 20's and is now being held on suspicion of murder at Sligo town garda station under section 4 of the criminal justice act.

Its the second murder in Sligo since Monday, while there were also reports of an attack on another man in the town. He was brutally assaulted and lost an eye.

However its unclear at this stage if any of the incidences are linked.

Gardaí investigating the murder of Aidan Moffitt in Sligo are examining if he may have met his killer online. It's also thought it may have a hate-related motive.

The 41-year-old auctioneer was found dead at his house on Monday night and is said to have suffered "significant physical injuries".

Crime Correspondent with the Irish Times, Conor Gallagher, says the investigation's at an early stage;

"The initial inquiries seem to suggest that this would have been someone he let into the house, so Gardaí are looking at who Mr Moffitt might have been in contact with in recent days, both online and offline, including possibly through dating apps."
