The company that runs the LUAS has been commended for helping keep commuters moving during severe weather.

This is the second year running that Transdev has picked up the award for Light Rail Operator of the Year at the Global Light Rail Awards.

At the event in London, the firm was praised for its "exceptional innovation, performance and customer service".

In particular, judges commended Transdev for its ability to "manage services" at times of severe weather - in particular the Beast from the East and Storm Emma.

The Luas Safety record was also acknowledged, as was Transdev's commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Judges were impressed with its annual Christmas charity event, where it asks Dubliners to fill an empty tram with shoe-boxes full of essentials for the homeless.

Last year 22,000 boxes were filled, and organisers are hoping to beat that figure in this year's initiative which will be held at the start of December.

Fergus Robertson Howard, CEO, Transdev Ireland and UK said winning the award two years in a row "reflects the commitment and passion of the Transdev Luas team in delivering customer focused services that really matter to our customers and the city of Dublin".

"Our vision is to be Dublin's preferred transport provider", he said.
