U2's plans for a visitor centre in the docklands to honour the band's history have already hit a stumbling block.

Locals living around Hanover Quay have branded the project "oppressive, intimidating and unattractive."

The four storey building would include a venue and replica of U2's former recording studio on the site.

Planning documents available through Dublin City Council show plans for “exhibit spaces, which will house memorabilia from U2’s vast musical history including old guitars, performance outfits and paraphernalia from their past”.

Promoters say it would be a destination for millions of fans around the globe.

63 locals have joined calls to oppose the project. 10 objections have been lodged with just six in favour.

However the proposed centre has the backing of Fáilte Ireland and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
