Seven people have been injured in Paris by an attacker armed with a knife and a metal bar, police in the city have said.

It happened in the Quai de la Loire area in the north-east of the city at around 11pm local time on Sunday night.

The stabbing happened near a cinema in the area, which is located on the banks of a canal.

Two British tourists are reported to be among those injured.

The UK's Foreign Office is said to be 'urgently investigating' the incident following those reports.

All victims have been taken to hospital, with four said to be 'severely' injured.

One man, said to be an Afghan national, has been arrested following the attack.

However, Reuters reports there was no 'initial indication' that the attack had a terrorist motive.
