Just one Dublin dog owner has paid a fine for not cleaning up after their pet this year.

Figures from the City Council show only four fines have been issued since the start of 2018.

Between 2014 and 2017 only 131 fines for dog fouling were issued, of which only 82 were in fact paid.

Green Party Councillor Patrick Costello is calling for better enforcement of dog fouling laws.

"Dog shit on the streets is not just littering, it is a public health issue and is frankly disgusting", he said.

"Dog waste is loaded with bacteria and parasites, and can cause a variety of illness including toxocariasis which can cause blindness".

There was a wide variation across the city on the numbers of fines issued, with Dublin South Central area giving out more fines than all other areas combined.

In 2015 Dublin South Central was the only area to give out any fines.

Coucillor Patrick Costello has called for more money and resources to deal with what he called a "significant health issue".
