Ireland's women's hockey team are into the final of the World Cup.

It's after they defeated Spain in a tense shoot-out, the game finishing 1-1 at full time.

Only three minutes were on the clock when Ireland's Anne O'Flanagan opened scoring. She converted after a penalty corner was awarded early in the first quarter.

Two more penalty corners ensued in the opening 30 minutes, however there were no more goals.

Alicia Magaz equalised for Spain in the third quarter, finally putting her team on the scoreboard after 39 minutes.

With the score at 1-1 at the final whistle, the game went to a penalty shoot-out.

It finished 2-2 after five shots with Spain missing their sixth and Ireland's Gillian Pinder taking advantage, and securing Ireland's spot in the final in the process.

Today's match marked the first time an Irish team had ever reached a semi-final.

Ireland will play the defending champions The Netherlands in tomorrow's final which will take place in London at 4.30pm.
