The announcement was made just moments ago at Dublin Castle to rapturous crowds.

More people voted in this referendum than in almost any other in the history of the state.

1.4 million euro voted to remove the equal right to life from the constitution so the referendum has carried by 66.4%.

Every constituency with the exception of Donegal has voted YES to legalising abortion.

All 11 in Dublin voted for repeal, with the highest vote in Fingal at 77 percent.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar Senator Catherine Noone and Simon Harris at Dublin Castle

Jubilant men and women chanted Yes! Yes! Yes! as the Taoiseach and Health Minister walked on stage and it appears Simon Harris set a few pulses racing.

Some light rain had begun falling but there's no way it could dampen down the mood.
