A supervised injection centre may facilitate users of crack and cocaine as well as those who take heroin.

Merchants Quay Ireland will run the country's first ever supervised injection facility for those addicted to heroin.

It's hoped it will open later this year, although a local primary school is getting legal advice on whether it can stop the pilot project from going ahead.

The aim is to take open injecting off the streets and into a safe environment where medical treatment can be given instantly.

Now it's been revealed the Minister for Drugs Strategy will examine if its remit should be widened to include users of crack and cocaine.

However Catherine Byrne says she'll await the findings of a report into the first six months of the centre's operation before making a decision.
