Thousands Expected In Dublin For Water Protest

Tens of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of Dublin from around 1pm for a national protest against water charges.

The demonstration will assemble at Heuston and Connolly Stations and Merrion Square, before marching across O'Connell Bridge for a rally on O'Connell Street.

The Right2Water campaign are stressing it will be a peaceful protest.

People Before Profit Alliance TD Richard Boyd Barrett explains the purpose of the demonstration:

 

 The routes from the three assembly points are as follows:

 

Connolly Station assembly

 

Connolly Station via Matt Talbot Bridge, heading south via Shaw Street, and right onto Pearse Street.   Merge with Merrion Square marchers and turn right on to Tara Street at the Fire Station, continuing past the Irish Times building. Then left onto Burgh Quay and on towards O'Connell Bridge

 

Merrion Square assembly

 

Demonstrators will assemble in front of the National Art Gallery on Merrion Square West, head straight towards the Davenport Hotel and proceed on to Westland Row. The march will then turn left onto Pearse Street and merge with Connolly Station marchers who will be entering Pearse Street from Shaw Street. The march will turn right on to Tara Street at the Fire Station, continuing past the Irish Times building. Then left onto to Burgh Quay and on towards O'Connell Bridge.

 

Heuston Station assembly

Demonstrators will proceed from St. John’s Road to the top of O’Connell St along North Quays. 

The main stage will be located at the the top of O’Connell Street (Parnell Square end)

It's believed the rally on O’Connell Street will start at approximately 2pm and last for around one hour.
