Hotels that hike up prices at peak times could face higher taxes.

Ahead of the budget, the government's considering a higher 13.5 per cent VAT rate for hotels that charge more than 150 euro a night.

Other places would be able to keep the special 9 per cent rate introduced in 2011.

The Irish Examiner says the move is to crack down on hotels that increase prices during peak tourist season.
