Homeless groups have reacted angrily to yesterday's Government figures showing 9,891 men, women and children in emergency accommodation.

An extra 19 people have been added to the list since June, and Focus Ireland says the figures show the Government's failing to deal with the crisis.

The Simon Communities say it's not fair that people have nowhere to go if they can't afford to rent.

Merchant's Quay Ireland says it's a "national disgrace" that "will define Ireland for generations to come".

Meanwhile, Anthony Flynn, the CEO of Inner City Helping Homeless, says the Government needs a new plan.

He argued: "The Minister's five-year-plan has failed - his plan for 2020 Ireland has already failed; Rebuilding Ireland has already failed.

"Unless the Minister is going to come out and tackle this head on, we're going to continue to see people enter homeless services right the way through the rest of the year."
