Homeless figures have risen to a record high of 8,800 people.

3,300 children were among those living in emergency accommodation last month.

The official government figures show that's a 4 percent rise in homelessness since October.

Meanwhile the latest report from the Residential Tenancies Board show we've reached a new record high for rents.

The average cost of a home in Dublin now stands at €1,518. That's 7% more than at the height of the boom.

Costs are up just under 10% on last year alone. That's despite new laws which prevent landlords from increasing rents any higher than 4% in pressure zones like Dublin.

President Michael D Higgins has used his Christmas message to highlight the homeless crisis
