The Health Watchdog is to examine the safety of out-of-hours surgery at the National Maternity Hospital, including the availability of consultants.
It follows the death of a 34 year old woman after surgery for an ectopic pregnancy on a Sunday in May 2016.
The Hospital apologised to the husband of Malak Thawley and settled a case taken by Alan Thawley following what his lawyers referred to as a 'cascade of negligence'.
HIQA's review was ordered by the Health Minister who felt there were reasonable grounds to believe there is a patient safety risk in relation to the provision of surgery outside core working hours.
