If a status red alert for snow is triggered in the next few days, it may mean schools and other buildings are shut.
Employers are being reminded that they have "a duty of care for all employees under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act".
Business group ISME is asking companies to consider if "it is safe to ask employees to travel to work, or to undertake their work."

Employers are being urged to put an Adverse Weather Policy in place so staff are clear on whether they should to come to work or stay at home during extreme weather events like Storm Emma and ex Hurricane Ophelia.
Workers may have difficulty if transport is affected in their area, or if their kids are off school.
Manager of the HR Suite, Caroline McEnery, says if for whatever reason you choose not to go into work, then you need to let your employer know as soon as possible.
"Once you've done that that, it's up to your employer to decide whether they pay you or not", she explains.
"However if your boss makes the decision to close or decides that it's not safe for you to drive to work or to do whatever you need to do as part of your work, then they are taking the cost of that on board."
